Lettering V's Typography

The difference between the terms Lettering and Typography are predominately physical but also include method and purpose.

Typography refers to the study of the moveable letterforms and how they will be set on a surface in the printing press process.  The letters are designed to be used again and again by many different clients for many different printed productions.  They can be set in different ways for different purposes.

"It is the study of letters applied to typefaces"*
"Gerrit Noordzij, professor of typeface design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands, from 1960 to 1990, defines typography as “writing with prefabricated characters.”*

(Type feels uniform)

Lettering refers to any words that are designed by hand through the medium of drawing.  This style forms letters and words that are unique in style and to the job brief.

Calligraphy refers to the use of hand made text sections.  It is simular to lettering, but different:

"Calligraphy is based on penmanship; it’s essentially “writing letters.” Lettering, on the other hand, is based on draftsmanship, i.e. “drawing letters.” "

(lettering feels the human touch)

Varied terms:

Leading - Typography - gaps between lines of text
Line Spaceing - Lettering - gaps between lines of text
Kerning - Typography - refers to the gap between letters.  Actually refers to the overlap of a section of the letterform into the next letterform's area.  Better to refer to this as "tightening up the space"
